The American duo behind The Passport Couple came to Bucharest with open eyes and healthy appetites. Their first stop was, of course, the Palace of Parliament — the heaviest building in the world, a monument to Ceaușescu’s megalomania, designed to echo Pyongyang more than Paris. Imposing as it is, they couldn’t help but admire its surreal grandeur, framed by autumn fountains and carpets of fallen leaves.

Food quickly became their second obsession. At Luca, a bakery chain you’ll find on nearly every corner, they sampled a covrig cu cașcaval (a pretzel-like bread with toasted cheese) and a măc cu semințe (seed-topped bread). “Romania can really kill a doughnut hole,” they laughed later — after meeting the true star of the trip: papanși, the fried cheese doughnuts drowned in sour cream and berry jam at Hanul lui Manuc, Bucharest’s oldest inn. Along the way they worked through other staples: fasole bătută, sarmale with polenta, and a hearty spinach-and-chickpea stew.
Between meals, they wandered into some of the city’s treasures: the jewel-box Stavropoleos Monastery, the Instagram-famous Cărturești Carusel bookstore with its swirling balconies, and the ornate Romanian Athenaeum, where they stumbled into a rehearsal and heard live symphony music for the price of a coffee.
Their last days took them into Herăstrău Park, down Michael Jackson Alley, and through the Dimitrie Gusti Village Museum, where centuries of rural life are preserved in timber and thatch. By the time they boarded the train to Brașov, The Passport Couple weren’t just documenting a capital — they were living proof of what Bucharest does best: overwhelm you, charm you, and feed you until you can’t help but fall in love.
