Picture this: in early 2025, Romanians funneled 5.5 billion lei into betting, lotteries, and online casinos — more than what was spent on hotel stays nationwide. That glitzy allure of the slots is no surprise when the economy tightens. Escapism beats planning a holiday any day.
Now, cast your gaze across Europe. Tourism isn’t collapsing. In Q2 2025, international arrivals across the continent rose by 3.3% year-on-year, even though overnight stays dipped slightly — mainly a calendar shuffle, not a lack of interest. Long-haul travel and off-season demand are increasingly damping economic headwinds.
Greece, for instance, pulled off a €6 billion travel surplus in H1 2025—an 11% jump in travel receipts amid rising spending per stay. Spain, after welcoming a staggering 94 million foreign visitors in 2024, expects even more in 2025. Tourists, whether budget or luxe, are still chasing experience—just smarter.
Back to Romania. In the first half of 2025, we saw 1.11 million foreign visitors, up 5.5% year-on-year. Foreign tourists made up 19.2% of all arrivals, and their overnight stays climbed 5.2%, contributing to an overall 2.3% rise in total overnights.
Still, too much of Romania’s leisure cash is lighting up slots, not castle corridors or mountain trails. But there’s a pivot opportunity here.
Revitalized spots like Olimp prove what smart reinvestment can yield. The allure of our Carpathians, rich rural heritage, and budget-friendly charm are exactly what Europe’s savvy travelers are craving.
With sharper digital marketing, refreshed voucher programs aimed at families and emerging markets, and infrastructure upgrades (think railway upgrades and coastal enhancements), Romania can redirect that leisure spend toward experience — not escape.
Romanians are still spending. The question is where. If tourism adapts — digitally, structurally, creatively — this country can outshine the blinking lights of casinos with genuine, enduring appeal.
