Throwing a Dart, Landing in Romania

One random dart on a map brought Brett and his friend Joe to a country they knew almost nothing about: Romania. Within 24 hours of throwing that dart, they were standing in Bucharest trying to pronounce “sarmale” and learning that “miți” should always be eaten with mustard.

What followed was six self-imposed “missions” designed to push them into the culture. They ran 10 kilometers through the city, stumbled upon the largest thermal spa in Europe, and were swept into Bucharest’s nightlife thanks to a local named Chris. They hopped a train to Brașov, where mountain views and pastel streets felt like an undiscovered Austria. And of course, they made it to Bran Castle—the so-called home of Dracula—where history and myth blur together.

The real highlight wasn’t castles or clubs but people. A coffee shop owner in Brașov shared her story of building a business for her son; a village mayor introduced them to traditional foods; locals insisted they taste “slanina,” pig fat and all, because “that’s Romania.” By the end, what began as a stunt became a revelation: sometimes the best adventures are the ones you never plan.
